UC Berkeley Climate Inventory and Footprint
- Who did it: UC Berkeley
- What they did (and when): Conducted a traditional emissions inventory, then supplemented it with a "carbon footprint". The footprint includes emissions in the inventory but also adds in other life cycle emissions associated with electricity purchases, purchase of goods and services, and construction activities.
- Why they did it: The University recognized that its traditional inventory "does not fully reflect the complete carbon footprint of campus activities". The footprint was conducted at the request of a steering committee.
- Results/outcomes/successes/failures/lessons learned: UC Berkeley's carbon footprint is more than twice the size of its traditional inventory. Of emissions included in the footprint, the traditional inventory contributes 43%. University purchase of goods and services contributes another 28%. Construction adds 19% and electricity (lifecycle, excluding fuel combustion, which is already in the inventory) adds the remaining 10%.
